2021.09.24 04:20 FlyingDreamer [Esports] The "Fyre festival" of esports... before Fyre festival: Gaming paradise
Because history repeats itself, the disastrous Fyre Festival (2017) was not the only one of its kind: gamers had one event they will remember in the same vein, two years prior (2015). Maybe, if Billy McFarland and Ja Rule had known of "Gaming paradise", history may have been different. But, alas…
The marvellous idea
Picture this: you are a member of a professional esports team, and you find yourself, and your team invited to a tournament, to be held in a five-star resort, playing your matches against the seaside. From September 6 to 13, 2015, in Slovenia, Sasha Bulic, the organizer, promised you a great experience, a tournament to remember, with live music, thousands of people on site to cheer for you, and even more via streaming services.
What could go wrong?
The breathtaking accommodations
Each team was promised paid expenses, a jacuzzi, with multiple flat sized rooms. Your team had standards for an event of this calibre, and for a team of your level: someone to greet you in the airport, transport to your accommodations, no problem with documents, police, authorities, embassies, or the law. For sure!
The incredible equipment
If your team was into CS:GO or Dota 2, the least the organizer should do is to have computers. Gaming computers in this particular scenario. You, as a professional gamer, assume the organization will have the equipment necessary, so you can show your skill, amaze your fans, and maybe gain some sponsors. This kind of gaming PC were not easy to come by in Slovenia, but for sure there will be gaming PCs for a gaming festival.
The great prize
USD$50.000 as a prize pool is not something to sneeze at. The first prize was $30.000, the second $15.000, and for the third, $5.000. But even if your team didn't win money, it was not the only event in these days: some teams had another ones to go, in some cases days after the gaming paradise finished. Because it was going to finish in time, no doubt.
The High Priest in charge
Sasha Bulic had experience in software development, not in esports or in events like this, but he didn't let this details stop him. He founded the host company, "The gaming resorts", in 2014. Gaming.rs was subcontracted to take care of the organizing part. Sasha Bulic was always laughing, even in the more stressful of situations. But hey, life is better with some laughs, right?
The unforgettable results
You know where this is going.
The goal of 3.000 tickets was not met, and the 200 (two hundred) sold was not enough to cover basic costs of the operations. Thins means tickets for your team to travel to the festival, tickets you had to pay at least in part so your team and staff could assist, even if you had to put money out of your pocket to do it. Some teams were left stranded for hours in the airport, without the shuttles promised to go to your hotel. And the accommodations booked in the hotels were not paid.
Too many esports teams arriving at the same time, without previous notice, was suspicious for the hotel staff, who had not being informed of the event. Police is called, your passports are confiscated, and for some teams, who had plans to travel to another countries after the festival, this could cause them problems. It was so lucky the gaming paradise staff informed the embassies what was going on, giving the passports back, even when it could have been better if they had done it before the arrival of you and the rest of the teams...
The rooms were way less luxurious than the ones promised: instead of multiple rooms, each team had to be cramped into shared accommodations, and some of your team's members had to sleep in couches and floors. The jacuzzi was broken, and was not paid in the first place. But eh, small details.
The first day, the tournaments were delayed due to rain. But such is life, and you can fix it if you know how to improvise when there is a problem. In this case, your teams was told you had to play twice as expected in the second day. There was just a little itty bitty problem: a lack of PCs for some teams to play. PCs who were from an internet café in Belgium, but the drivers find themselves in some trouble and, lo and behold, the screen arrived. Without CPUs. Maybe because the rental company was not paid, but it was just a rumour, for sure. After all, the resourceful staf build some PC, with no graphic cards.
But it was just a few stumbles, right?
After all, the prizes were nice, and the exposure!
The prizes were not paid immediately: the winner got an IOU, a pay promise for 90 days after the events. The results were the expected. The exposure was limited, since the streaming was hosted in exclusive through MLG, which mean no twitch streaming. The public was confused about where they could see the matches. And even the ones who find out the streaming… it was so low quality it was insulting. The connection was poor and no one had tested the streaming before going live.
Dota tournament, scheduled after the CS:GO, was cancelled due to this and other problems.
Gaming paradise today
Bulic said it was his first event, and he did better than anybody around. It was also his last event. As far as we know, he never tried his luck into another esport event. The company "The gaming resorts" had no assets left, was in bankrupt and, therefore, there was no way, shape or form, for the winners to get their money.
Some teams had their work and career at risk: in the Titan team, a few members fell ill and their presence in a Dubai tournament, to be held after the gaming paradise, was not secured. A subcontractor who’d helped Gaming Paradise organize the event, ePlayground, accused the organization of scamming them, and a representative from ePlayground claimed that the company was “fucked over just like the players.”
By the way, Sasha Bulic had an "issue", in the words of people from Gaming.rs. He will laugh every time he was under pressure, or in stressful situations.
On top of this, shortly after it was over, things started to disappear from the Internet. The official website went down and remains down to this day. Bulic said it was because of viruses, crashes, and attacks on the website. The facebook page had some details, like Bulic name and contact telephone number.
Sasha Bulic has no plans to organize another esports event, ever.

2021.09.24 04:20 Raitality Hours instead of Years
If you did do research, does anyone know if you should put in the number of hours you spent actually doing work on it?
For a bit of clarification; I did research for 1.5 years, and got decent results, but I don't think the time span fully reflect the effort I put in (there were lots of late night slideshows and cleaning stuff), and I was just wondering if I could put hours instead of years.
CONTEXT: I did ~1500 hours (20 per week)
