2022.01.29 01:03 425trafficeng Deciding on OMSCS vs ASU vs UIUC
Background: I’m currently 30, have a bachelors+masters in civil engineering and I have a bit over 4 years of experience working as a traffic engineer in a west coast tech hub. My day to day functions are leading designs in CAD, meeting with municipality stakeholders, cost estimation, mentoring junior engineers/interns and performing technical writing for specifications. Its not a bad job at all, my issue is that I'm absolutely bored of my mind and the fact there's pretty much nothing that I need to really learn to continue climbing the ladder is pretty terrifying because I love learning new skills to apply to my work.
So I decided to go back to school and am currently finishing coursework in data structures, analysis of algorithms and computer architecture at a community college this semester. I have already completed intro to programming and discrete math. I plan on submitting applications to start Fall 22 to earn a masters and am looking at OMSCS, ASU online MCS and UIUC online MCS.
When it comes to school choice, I can pretty much be positive I’ll get into ASU, the advantages are that it’ll be one of the quicker ones to complete and the cost is right in the center at 15k, but without the name recognition of UIUC/GaTech.
I’m about 90% sure I’ll get into OMSCS, they have the most class options, are the most affordable and have great name recognition, only downside it’s the longest to complete.
UIUC is the most competitive to get into of these online options, probably has the best name recognition and is the most expensive at 22k. It’ll take probably the same amount of time to complete as ASU but also has the least varied options for software engineering classes.
Overall from what I know about myself now, my career goal is to get into backend software engineering. I’d love to try to land an internship after a semester or two and plan on spending this summer grinding leetcode/building a project to make that a possibility. I’ll probably take a shot at landing a full time role while in graduate school if that’s a possibility as well.
So which do program do you feel makes the most sense in my situation? Any advice would be appreciated!

2022.01.29 01:03 Dung_beetle95 Is it possible to do needle felting on silk?
I made a silk painting that I really love except the way I tried to do the clouds didn't turn out well. I was thinking of trying to do some felting on the silk, with white, in order to make the clouds. Is it possible to do felting on silk? Can anyone recommend resources on how to?

2022.01.29 01:03 Glittering-Exam-3938 Feeling trapped
I hesitate to write this, because by all means I know I should just be grateful I was born in the states and with an accepting family. I often feel like my struggles don’t really matter because I know so many other of you guys have it much worse than I.
Still, I can’t help but feel trapped within heteronormative standards. I often wish I was born straight just so I wouldn’t have to play my life like a chess game, choosing when and who to express myself around and when to appear “straight and normal” just to feel safe in my own neighborhood.
especially since I’m planning on studying abroad in Japan soon, I feel like I have to start suppressing my attractions and “gay behaviors” (not my words someone else’s) now just to protect myself from social rejection. It would already be hard enough being an obvious foreigner, (I look obviously more latino than Filipino) presenting myself as Gay would probably just double down on that.
I still want to follow through on studying abroad. Idk some part of me thinks it’s a mistake to even try.
Is there even any point to this or am I just being stupid? I’ve been gaslit and invalidated so many times in my life that it’s quite hard for me to validate my own feelings.

2022.01.29 01:02 mniels Stropping question....
What would you recommend for stropping when it comes to blade maintenance. I am not sure if I am better off with your basic black and green compound or going to the emulsion route. And if I go with emulsions, which ones do I need?
FYI, I am talking about maintenance on pocket knives, nothing crazy. Just looking to put a little bit of edge back on before it gets to the point where I would need to break out the stones.

2022.01.29 01:02 throwawayy1822 Should I lease a reliable and cheap car for food delivery
Before anyone mentions the 11-13k per year mileage limit , I only plan to use the vehicle for 5.5 months per year. For the 3 years I’ll use it I can drive my 2008 Jetta beater for the first 6.5 months then the leased car for 5 months to avoid going over 10k. Its going to be used 90% of the time for business use so I can write off the lease payment and miles(only will use personal use wise once or twice a week to go on a date nearby).

2022.01.29 01:02 AdministrativeRub484 Why do some people prefer Pytorch?
This is not me hating on Pytorch, there are things I like a lot more about Pytorch than Tensorflow, but I still want to know if im missing something...
I have some experience in deep learning, I have taken a few graduate level classes on machine and deep learning, mostly theoretical but with some code - mainly Pytorch.
Today I wanted to see if I could solve a real world problem with Pytorch, but the fact that it was extremely hard to load the data into tensors (text data, I'm looking at tweets) and the fact that I had to write quite a lot boilerplate code made me quit this "project".
Why is there no training or evaluation method for Pytorch's models? Why would you want to call a function to zero out the gradients, another one to compute the loss, another one to update parameters, change between train and eval, etc...?
Why would you want to have more control on these aspects of model building?
I understand Pytorch is very useful for academia because you can more easily make "new" things (architectures, mechanisms, etc...) with it since you have a lower level control over everything, but for other users, why?
Pytorch is more intuitive to use than Tensorflow, but from what I've seen that's only if you want to use readily available datasets, like the ones Pytorch provides. As I said, I tried loading text data from a dataset I made and that was stored on a txt file, but Pytorch kept throwing me errors left and right because I somehow had a list and not a tensor, dimensions didn't match, there was no padding, so I needed to make my own collate functions, etc.....
These last points were obviously my fault, but it's not like there was documentation for anything similar to what I wanted to do...

2022.01.29 01:02 ami_nil1987 Euler Tools proudly presents its newest peer-to-peer (P2P) service
As our dear Eulerians already know, Euler Tools team’s curiosity, diligence, and determination know no boundaries. Euler Tools does not define itself only with what the team delivers today. We rather take pride in our drive to provide an unmatched user experience in all things crypto. With this pioneering spirit in mind, we never take a moment to rest.
A peer-to-peer (P2P) service is a decentralized platform in which two individuals interact directly with one another, without third-party intermediation. Instead, the buyer and the seller transact directly with each other via the P2P service.
Today, peer-to-peer services involve activities that range from simple buying and selling to those that are considered part of the sharing economy. Some peer-to-peer services don’t even involve a paid transaction by the users at all, but they bring together individuals to work on joint projects, share information, or communicate without direct intermediation.
